RE: “Books for Success!” Project
Dear Ms. Atwater,
Springfield Elementary is pleased to present this proposal for your review. We look forward to partnering with you to install a Book Nook Vending Machine that will promote literacy, foster inclusion, and reinforce positive student behavior. Springfield Elementary serves over five hundred students, many of whom come from low-income families with limited access to books at home. Research shows that students who have easy access to engaging, choice-based reading materials read more frequently and show improved academic performance. Our Literacy Through Innovation! program will use a fun, high-visibility book vending machine as both a literacy hub and a positive behavior incentive system.
During the past year, we piloted a simple book reward system and saw strong student excitement — especially among reluctant readers, students with disabilities, and those learning English. The book vending machine will expand this school-wide success by giving every student the opportunity to choose their own books as rewards for positive behavior, academic effort, and acts of kindness.
We are requesting $8250 in funding to purchase and install a Book Nook Vending Machine (including initial book stock, custom wrap, shipping, on site set up and training). This investment will directly support literacy growth, inclusion for all learners, and a stronger school culture of positive behavior.
We appreciate the ABC Foundation’s commitment to education and literacy. Please feel free to contact me at (555) 555-1212 x123 if you need any additional information.
Thank you,
Jennifer Smith

Project Abstract
Springfield Elementary School requests $8250 to purchase and install a book vending machine that will serve as a powerful tool for increasing student literacy, supporting inclusion, and encouraging positive behavior. The machine will dispense free, high-interest books to students who earn tokens through positive behavior, academic improvement, and community contributions.
This innovative program will benefit all 500+ students, with special emphasis on at-risk learners, students with disabilities, English language learners, and those from low-income households. Expected outcomes include increased reading volume, greater student ownership over reading choices, improved school climate, and measurable growth in literacy engagement.
Statement of Need
Springfield Elementary School needs greater access to books. Many students read below grade level, and many do not have books at home. School data shows that about 45% of students are reading below grade level, and behavior referrals remain a concern.
A Book Nook Vending Machine addresses three core needs at once:
• Literacy: Provides easy, exciting access to books students want to read.
• Inclusion: Every student — regardless of reading level, language background, or economic status — can participate and feel successful.
• Positive Behavior: Reinforces PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) by rewarding kindness, effort, and good choices with books.
Program Description
The Literacy Through Innovation! program will install a colorful, school-branded Book Nook Vending Machine in a high-traffic area (near the cafeteria or library). Students will earn tokens for:
• Demonstrating positive behavior
• Meeting reading goals
• Helping others
• Showing academic effort
Tokens can be redeemed for a free book of their choice. The machine will be stocked with a wide variety of appealing titles (graphic novels, chapter books, picture books, sports books, diverse characters, lower reading levels, Spanish and Bilingual, etc.) to ensure all students see themselves as readers.
Goals and Objectives
1. Increase the number of books read by students by 40% within the first year.
2. Reduce negative behavior referrals by 25% through positive reinforcement.
3. Improve reading attitudes and self-efficacy, especially among reluctant readers and diverse learners.
4. Create a school-wide culture where reading is celebrated and accessible to everyone.
